A Matter of Safety

You must have your vehicle inspected before you can renew your registration in our state. This is required annually to ensure your safety and others who share the road with you. Therefore, the state checklist includes multiple crucial components for safe operation. Brakes, for instance, must be in sound working condition. This includes both the regular braking system and the parking brake. We must also check all exterior lights, including turn signals, brake lights, and headlights. Other items on the checklist include the horn, seatbelts, side and rearview mirrors, and windshield wipers. The windshield must be in a safe condition, meaning it doesn't show major cracking. Your vehicle must also have a properly functioning steering and suspension system. Finally, your car's tires must be in good condition and have a safe amount of tread depth left. Antique cars are exempt from safety inspection.

Protecting the Environment

Many automobiles in our state also require an annual emissions check as part of the inspection and registration renewal process. This applies to certain vehicles registered in one of 19 identified counties, including Wake. This is done to limit the amount of harmful chemicals expelled into the air as we drive. Controlling emissions helps minimize damage to the environment. As expected, antique cars are also exempt from this standard. However, all vehicles at least 20 years old or registered for farm use can skip the test. Diesels and gasoline-powered autos with less than 70,000 miles and less than three years old are also exempt. It's important to note that a DMV-sanctioned inspection station must complete all required North Carolina vehicle checks with a certified mechanic.
