- Do not change oil after engine get to operating temperature. Oil is too HOT.
- Locate oil filter and drain plug prior to changing oil. It can get confusing with all the components under the engine.
- Wear gloves and old clothing to keep from getting grease in contact with skin.
- Use eye protection to prevent oil from getting in contact with eyes.
How to Change Oil in Vehicle:
- Step 1 (please note there are certain tasks and materials needed prior to this step, however this is the first step in changing the oil) – remove drain plug from engine oil pan.
- Step 2 – after all oil has drained from engine oil pan, inspect threads on oil drain plug and oil pan. If no damage has been done, hand-tighten the drain plug as far as possible. Use wrench to tighten drain plug.
- Step 3 – locate oil filter and remove. Allow all oil to drain from oil filter housing.
- Step 4 – match replacement oil filter with used oil filter and lubricate the new rubber gasket with new motor oil (increases seal between filter and engine).
- Step 5 – verify drain plug is tightened, and verify oil filter is tightened.
- Step 6 – refill engine with motor oil. It is crucial to keep track of how much oil is added to the engine. Check owner’s manual for correct amount and specified weight.
- Step 7 – start engine for 10-15 seconds. This allows for oil to flow through the filter and engine. Check oil level on dipstick. If below acceptable level, add oil slowly while checking level on dipstick. The trick is a little at a time. If too much oil is added, use a vacuum evacuator to remove engine oil. If you don’t have access to a vacuum evacuator, remove drain plug to excess drain oil.
- Step 8 – rebottle used oil and bag used oil filter to return to location where new oil was purchased. If in Raleigh, NC, feel free to drop off at C&C Auto Service during normal business hours and we see that the oil / oil filter are disposed of properly.
